One major factor leading up to the war was the system of alliances throughout Europe.

Alliances created an apprehensive mood as countries allied and other countries allied in response to other alliances.

This essay will consider the extent to which the alliance system was the most significant of these causes, and more crucially, the way in which the alliance system was linked to the other causes.

It will be argued that the alliance system, whilst a key provocation of tension, was neither the most significant cause nor the trigger for war; however, it was arguably the factor which created a war on such a scale − which created the first ‘World War’.

The Origins of the First World War suggest that james joll thought that without a strong army and navy, heir country will be powerless, because in the text it states, “We realize that without power, without a strong army and a strong navy, there can be no welfare for us”(Document 8).

This primary source helps explain militarism was an underlying cause of the war because it is suggesting the reader that without a powerful defense, there would be no welfare.

In America, it was initially called the European War.

More than 9 million combatants were killed; a casualty rate exacerbated by the belligerents' technological and industrial sophistication, and tactical stalemate.

I believe Imperialism played a huge part in causing World War 1 because the great powers of Europe all wanted to make money selling their natural resources, but when they ran out there was a huge conflict for resource rich land and expanding their respective countries.

This created a great deal of tension between the great powers of Europe which threatened European war years before World War 1 started.
