Workshops in fiction and poetry are at the core of this two-to-three-year program.From over five hundred applicants, a maximum of twelve new students are enrolled each year.Through workshops, independent studies, and literature courses, the faculty work with students to challenge their understanding of themselves as writers and to deepen and critically reflect on the aesthetic, ethical, and political assumptions behind their writing.
The MFA thesis and its oral defense are required of all degree candidates.
The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) at the University of Alaska Anchorage is a low-residency program in creative writing that emphasizes a literary approach to exploring and redefining relationships between people and place.
All students graduate with the ability to comprehend and critique work across genres, and an expanded sense of possibilities for their own work.
Students are encouraged to situate their creative practice in a critical context—to engage with the history, theory and politics of contemporary writing, and to think hard about what and why they write.
We are home to an undergraduate journal, The Composition Program introduces students to academic conversations at the university and continues the lifelong process of preparing students to engage the many reading and writing opportunities they face in their communities and in the world.
Graduate students may opt to take creative writing workshops (ordinarily, at least one workshop in fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction is offered each academic year) as well as submit their work to the numerous writing contests open to UConn graduate students.
