As I visited the Solidarity Rastafarian Organic Farm for the first time in 2007, there was not much more than a couple of patches of scattered produce fields on the sloping mountainside, but I saw great potential for an agricultural base for the island.

Initially, I thought that this farm needed outside support and facilities in order to fully function, but having returned in 2010, to my surprise the farm had grown four times its size, and had far exceeded my expectations.

It astounded me how the whole thing had been run and sustained locally with no input from outside investors.

The farm did not need my facilities in order to function.

The next step towards a truly sustainable architecture is through meeting the broader needs of a sustainable lifestyle, which includes localized agriculture.

By studying the techniques and principles of a self-sustained organic farm in St.Designed for a sustainable lifestyle that empowers and allows people to grow their own organic goods, this project encompasses a larger agenda of restorative design and a responsibility to the overall ecology of our planet.What housing developers often leave out of their designs is an understanding of the impact that buildings leave on the environment.I wanted to look at sustainability beyond the green-washing and checklist based development that pervades the current trend of 'green' architecture.Sustainability is not a matter of simply applying eco-friendly materials or providing parking for electric vehicles.'Redefining Sustainability' is the title of my fifth year architectural thesis.The project sought a deeper understanding of sustainability and the issues at its core.Through the mergence of dwelling unit and farm, a unique synthesis occurs.The dwelling unit can become a cultivation tool used to germinate, water, compost and grow organic goods, providing the infrastructure needed for a thriving garden.Martin, this project has taken the essentials of a large-scale agricultural operation and consolidated it into a packaged, fully sustainable housing product that can be transportable and transformable.Prefabrication has always been a subject of discussion for architects and engineers.
