1. Dong Xuan Market
This large three-story market to the north of Hanoi's Old Quarter offers a varied cornucopia of goods of all sorts. Hundreds of stalls, with thousands of workers, trade extremely fresh produce, dried foods, household goods, appliances and more. The market has an interesting history. It saw fierce fighting between Vietnamese resistance units and the French. Later, in 1994, the market was destroyed in a fire that resulted in the death of five people and the loss of an estimated USD4.5 million in stock.

Магазины

1. Super Hi-Fi Center
If purchasing cheap audio or digital equipment is included in Vietnam travel plans, this store should be on your list of places to visit. Hai Ba Trung Street is full of shops stocking Panasonic, Sony or Samsung stereos and VCD machines. The sales team at Hi-Fi Center seem to be the most knowledgeable about their products. Here you will find a large range of digital cameras and camcorders for less than $1,000, including warranties from the manufacturers. The store also features mini disk players, laser disks and a TV that will fit inside your backpack.

Indochine House features some incredible furniture. Examples include beautifully carved dark-wood cupboards and chairs from the 1940s. Also take a look at the twin Chinese temple panels that lean against the wall. The home furnishings are mostly from the 19th and 20th centuries and many are not old enough to be called antiques. Nonetheless, the French period brought some fine furniture to town and it is here for you to gaze at or perhaps even buy.

3. New Factory Gallery (The)
In a funky space that blends the no frills feel of an abandoned warehouse with the mood of a trendy art gallery made to look rustic, the New Factory Gallery sells both modern and ancient arts and handicrafts. Most of the items come from the ethnic minorities of northern Vietnam. In addition to the typical lacquer tray sets, embroidered shirts and ceramic plates, the store sells quirkier items such as wicker fish baskets in a variety of geometric shapes and odd, rusted tools.

Opening hours: 9am-9pm daily

4. Quach Chi Gallery
Walking into this gallery is like taking a step back in time. There is no part of the wall uncovered, no ledge unfilled, no piece of floor unoccupied by some manner of antique or artifact. An old lady sits at the back, presiding over a leather-topped writing desk, inscribed vases towering behind her, lavishly carved altarpieces gathering dust to her left. Huge yellowed parchments bearing Chinese characters loom, as faded Cubist paintings jostle for view. Not everything is for sale, so It is a case of pointing and agreeing on a price. The old lady's shrewder than she looks, so watch out.
Address: 53 Pho Hue Hai Ba Trung District Hanoi

5. Gallerie L'Atelier
The unfinished exterior of this Old Quarter gallery is offset by an eclectic interior. The walls are covered in hilltribe bounty from the Northeast, ranging from traditional minority village textiles to 19th-century Japanese swords. Original hmong khen (flutes) share the abundant floor space with Thai basketwork and nung shaman outfits. Much of the indigenous Dao, Thai, Hmong and Nung handicrafts on show here have been made primarily for sale in Hanoi and beyond. Prices vary and range from USD20 for clothing and artifacts, and USD80 for antiques, but the dynamic environment makes this an enticing place to visit, even if you do not wish to buy anything.
